It'll be fun to see what works, especially the cleaning, paints, and other household and farm hints. This book was written before Dr. Chase's famous recipe book or Brannt's Techno Chemical Receipt Book or even The Standard Formulary by Albert E. Ebert from the 1800s! There are several hundred formulas for explosives, inks, stains, paints, waxes, and false finishes of all types, as well as advice on tanning hides, preserving eggs, drying fruit, purifying rancid butter and even a farrier / equestrian. Not only are there recipes for food and beverages, but recipes or formulas to make everything from home remedy medicines to paints and varnishes. It even contains several different liquors, beer or homebrew, and wine recipes for those interested in oenology, or making vinegars. The book contains tips for tinning, blacksmithing, cabinet-making, paint-making and more. These sections are important for metalworkers, woodworkers, craftspeople and especially folks restoring homes who are interested in authentic restoration of period paints, woodworking, japanning, and finishes. Take a step back in time and see how the men and women from the early1800s era did, made, and improvised in their daily life!!!! Here are just a few of the bizarre items in the book (there are many items even more bizarre in the book!!): Inflammation of the eye: If the complaint is caused by foreign bodies, they must be removed with the point of a paint brush, or the end of a piece of wire covered with lint, or washed out by injecting warm milk and water into the eye, with a small syringe. If particles of iron stick in it, they may be drawn out by a magnet, from whatever circumstance it may originate, the inflammation is to be subdued by bleeding from the arm, and from the neighborhood of the eye, by a dozen or more leeches. Painful affection of the nerves of the face: Treatment - Blisters, leeches, mercurial ointment, opium, and Fowler's solution of arsenic, with many other remedies of the same class, have been all recommended and used for the cure of this most painful of all the affections to which the human body is subject. Where the pains are so excessive as not to be borne, two grains or two grains and a half of the extract of belladonna, may be taken every three hours. When the pain is somewhat relieved, this quantity must be diminished. For a cure, apply to a skillful surgeon, who will divide the nerves. Catsup: Take a gallon of strong stale beer, a pound of anchovies washed from the pickle, the same of shallots peeled; half an ounce of mace, half an ounce of cloves, a quarter of an ounce of whole pepper, three or four large races of ginger, and two quarts of large mushroom flaps, rubbed to pieces, Cover these close, and let simmer till half wasted. Then strain it through a flannel bag; let it stand till quite cold, and then bottle it. This may be carried to any part of the world; and a spoonful of it to a lb. of fresh butter melted, will make a fine fish sauce, or will supply the place of gravy sauce. The stronger and staler the beer the better will be the catsup. Sick rooms: Take rue, sage, mint, rosemary, and lavender, fresh gathered, of each a handful, cut them small, and put them into a stone jar, pour upon the herb a pint of the best white-wine vinegar; cover the jar close, and let it stand 8 days in the sun, or near a fire; then strain it off, and dissolve in it an ounce of camphor. This liquid, sprinkled about the sick chamber, or fumigated, will much revive the patient, and prevent the attendants from receiving infection. Air Baths: Dr. Franklin informs us that every morning he got out of bed and passed half an hour in his chamber, according to the season, in writing or reading, without any clothes; and this, he adds, seems rather pleasant than otherwise. The front hinge is broken but is not fragile due to the strong binding cords and reinforcement binding on the inside. The bottom 1/2 inch of the spine leather is gone. The leather board corners have some wear and have been tinted and compressed for presentation and to preserve the value. There is no leather rot (powdery) but there are a couple old insect holes on the rear board only and don't appear on the inside rear board. The pages are age-toned but not brittle. Page edges have been cleaned. The book is missing the blank front endpapers and frontispiece; it starts with the title page. A very solid book. It's fascinating to read the old tips and tricks, medicinal medical treatments and recipes!
