ORIGINAL HEAVY BRASS, PUSH UP STYLE CANDLE HOLDER WITH WONDERFUL SIGNS OF USUAGE DISPLAYED AT OUR FAMILYS DOCUMENTED CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR HOME!!!! First let me start off by saying that I am cutting the length of my listings down because I have a great deal of items I'm trying to get listed and with listing all the history to each and every item from this home, it truly has taken a great deal of time. Therefore, any item from this home will have a letter inside the package with all the info on the home, battles that took place their, and any other info pertaining to the item. If you would like to know any more history other then what I actually list with the item, feel free to email me anytime and I will be happy to inform you of this info. I know many people decide weather or not to purchase an item by its history, so this is why I ask you to email me if you want to know more on its history to make this decision. There is more info below on the home as well. Here is a wonderful candle holder that would have been used in the Civil War Period, and possibly earlier. As you can see, this candle holder has seen its better days, but its still in usuable condition. I have seen this style used in many Officers tents in books that I have and these are pictured in many Victoria homes of the period. As many of you know, most items were held together with solder, and as you can see, this one has Solder in many areas. Some should be there, and a couple are for repairs. This really shows you that what ever Soldier had this, couldn't afford another one and they did all they could to fix this item and keep it. So, many Soldiers used these each night for writing in their diarys, or when they were writing their loved ones. I know my Ancestor has a couple different ones that he kept throughout the war, and one of them has been soldered just like this one. He was a Confederate Soldier and our home is a documented Confederate home/hospital that had 3 battles take place on our land. The home was not only a hospital to these battles but a few other Major battles. You can read more below on this home. Now, this candle holder has a slight lean to it from where its been fixed, and when I say lean, I"m not referring to the bottom, but I"m referring to the top, center portion where you see the solder at the base. Really gives it great character!! This is the very popular push up style candle holder and it still works perfectly. Theres a Wonderful Uniform Patina to this Brass candle holder and its dark brown in color with some green in places. The finger holder is in great shape an has the common brass rivet that was acustom to the Era. If you refer to pics above on the finger holder, you can see the actual file marks from where it was made and or fixed at some point. Also has solder in this area as well. This is all a Great indication of age. Also, make sure you notice the bottom egde as theres a iron ring that goes around the edge to give the candle holder support. This was another well known custom on period brass candle holders. Also, the center iron disk with a brass style rivet, then underneath the disk is more solder which shows more indications of the age. Now, theres no maker marks on this candle holder anywhere, and this was VERY common as many were made locally and overseas. But most of the ones overseas were maker marked and were much better in detail and quality. Not saying this isn't a good one at all, just meaning that ones that were from overseas where usually very fancy, etc. This is common on most any item of the period, like swords, knives, etc. There is still some wax in areas as I haven't cleaned this candle holder off and I'll leave all the cleaning up to the new owner as usual. There is only one down fall to this in my opinion and thats on the bowl area that would catch wax and that the finger holder attaches to.... there is a small seperation or crack in the seam that hasn't had solder placed on it, and it doesn't effect the item from being used, but if you do use it, and lots of wax gets on the bottom, then it could run onto whatever you have this sitting on. I"m sure with it being so small that it would more then likely seal it before any would come out. Its not even a 1/16th of an inch wide. and is 1 1/4 long..so that shows you how small it is, and if you look at pics, you can't see it, so again, that shows you how small it is. Again, it doesn't hurt the usage of this candle holder and truly I didn't know it was there until just now when I was measuring it. And since I mentioned measuring it, the size of this very rare brass candle holder is a little over 4 1/4" inches tall and just over 5" inches across the bottom. The candle hole width is 7/8" inch wide. Which is the standard size candle of the period. Now, I"m unsure if the X on the bottom was done to mark it for the Confederates as many Confederates would do this, and I can't tell you how many knives, swords, etc that I have with this same X and they are all certified as being Confederate. But most of them have lines around the X to make a box like the Rebel flag, so its possible it was done and the lines weren't placed, or was done for some other reason. One things for sure.. they are def. old and weren't done anytime soon as the patina is the same color across the X. So, if anyone did this recently, it wouldn't be the same Uniform patina. I have a Sheffield Bowie Knife case that has this exact X on it, and in front of the X is another one with lines to box it in... so it appears the Soldier never finished boxing it in and this may be the same deal with this X. But I"ll let you decide what you think as I have no way to prove this and its only my opinion per all the items I have with this same X mark. So, here is a Brass push up style candle holder that every collector should own as these were a MUST HAVE for any soldier so they could write loved ones, friends, family, work on their equipment at night, and so much more. From the books I have, it shows mainly Officers with this style candle holder, so I"m not sure if thats the case or not as I'm not a candle holder expert and will leave that up to you to decide. This particular brass candle holder has the iron disc on the bottom that dates it to the earlier models that would date 1780-1820, so this is truly a rare find all together. With it still having all the parts as it should and even showing usage from the solder that you normally wouldn't find on these candle holders as most are NEVER sold. Its unmarked and possibly Confederate as most of our items are since the home is a documented Confederate Civil War home. We had hundreds of documented camps throughout the War, so it could have been left or just used inside the hospital. This will come with a lifetime guarantee and my C.O.A, so you can't beat that!!. Now, with me not being a expert and knowing all the candle language, I placed "chamberstick" in item specifics as many were listed this way in books and in my research, so I placed this there for helping others to find it in the Ebay listings. If this is incorrect, just let me know as I can remove it, but I did place a question mark as I wasn't a 100% if you call this candle holder that...but again, many sites stated them as this. One was on the Gettysburg Musem site as they had one identical to this placed on there. Also, they had "Hogscraper" on many of them, but the bottom is a little different on most I saw, but it was the same push up style center portion that I have listed here...so, I"m not sure if this is called a Hogscraper as well. I"m sure you experts out there know and I would love to hear if so. If you refer to pics above, you'll see all the items I picked up this past week from my familys homesite to list on Ebay in the upcoming weeks, so check back if you see anything like. If you also noticed on the top of the pile, there is a Augusta Arsenal Pike with all attachments other then the wooden pole that I dug less then a week ago!! I may place this on as well, just not sure yet as two people want to photograph it for books. So, good luck on this Auction and as usual, there will be no reserve and a low starting price!! Dont forget that the 150th Civil War Anniversary is approaching and items like this are going to sky rocket, so get them now while you can and you will really save yourself some money. Now, as you can see, I don't disclose the names of my Ancestors, battles or the home due to so many trespasser's, but I will send all info to the winning buyer of the listing when it pertains to an item from this home. And I added a family picture showing you soldiers crossing the Rapidan river and creek that meet below our home as its just over the hill you see there in the background. Now, this portion of the field was later a documented battlefield and the carriage you see in this pic is identical to one we have in our barn that I have found quite a few relics still inside it that I will be listing over the next few days. Many will be horse equipment and other items of that nature, leather straps, etc. Also, most of my dug relics on my site come from that hill you see and the fields in picture. This picture was taken in early 1862 and was before the documented battle that took place where these Soldiers are crossing. The home was a Hospital to a total of five battles, four of them are very major battles, one is the largest of its kind out of the entire Civil War. Read more below on this home so you know where the item comes from and feel free to email me anytime. We have been very fortunate over the years to have items of such history and value and its a good feeling to pass them along to others so they can enjoy them with their familys as we have. If you looking for truly Authentic and Original items to display in your home or to resell, then you have truly found the right place to shop. All items that are expressed to be authentic, etc have been looked at by several licensed Civil War dealers and Historians and this isn't just my own opinion. This only applies to items with this statement added in the listing as I dig on a regular basis and don't take items I dig to be looked at unless its a very rare item and I need these opinions for selling purposes or the item is something I'm unsure of after removing it from the earth. All items packaged are done so in a way to protect your hard earned money as I ALWAYS pack above and beyond. Thank you for looking at my listing and make sure you check my site out as I have many rare items and not all of them are in the scrolling window below. It only gives you an idea of what I have, so others are posted on my site and I will be listing items each day. God Bless!! *****UPDATE***** . Anyone with a feedback score lower then 10 MUST email me prior to bidding or purchasing any item on my site and if this isn't done, I have the right to cancel your bid or purchase. FAMILYS HISTORY: Many items that you will find on my site come from a very historical home my family has owned since the early 1800’s. The home is a Documented Civil War Home that was used as a Headquarters and Hospital for many years. The first known camp was documented in 1861, and the last known Soldier to leave our home was in Jan.1866. Our family’s home has an unbelievable amount of history and with our Ancestors documenting everything they possibly could. It has really opened many doors in this ERA. A great deal of artifacts and documents have been used to write history books and MANY Civil War Books & Price Guides. Many items are still in Museums across the states as these items were donated by my Family or they are on loan so others can see these rare and fascinating relics. Another interesting thing that has been found on our family’s land is a great deal of Indian Artifacts that have been discovered to be related to the Pamunkey Indian Tribes. Many are still be discovered today, the same as many Civil War relics are still be unearthed by myself and my son. No one has been allowed to dig our land other then family members since we have owned the land. This is the reason for not being able to post the name of our home or the battles it was used due to so many Trespassers’ sneaking in at night to dig. Between metal detecting and "pit poking" as I call it, which is where I take a long rod and shove it into the ground to find deposits of ash...this shows me the exact location for camp fires, then I can locate huts, etc as many have been found and still are being found today. Another area that has been a great benefit to these type artifacts is a dump site that was used before the War by my Ancestors to dump trash, etc and then it was used during the War, then after the War until my father covered it up in the early 80's. Each year a layer of dirt was covered over the items tossed in the pit and I am now about 4-5 feet deep, and finding glass, iron, and many items used during the early and late 1800's. I have found two George Washington Taylor Flask, along with many others, found 7 buckles, buttons and numerous other items from the Civil War era. Many of these items will be listed on my site. The home sits atop a hill overlooking the mighty Rapidan River and just below our home there was a documented battle that took place on our land. On the far end of our land, and portions once owned, another battle took place. Then the third battle that is well known and named after something I have already mentioned, took place on many different sections of our land. The property is divided by the Rapidan and this also separates two counties. Now, with those battles mentioned, our home was used for a total of 5 Documented battles, and this doesn't count the numerous skirmishes that took place. I consider four of these to be Major, but in all reality, each battle was a Major battle. With the home having 3 battles on its land, you can imagine the amount of items dropped, dumped, and left behind during the period. Its hard to picture how many items were left, but one thing I can say, its Thousands of items and if my family didn't save the majority of these rare relics, a huge portion of our Nation's History would be lost. Its hard to explain what a home could look like with hundreds of thousands of Soldiers camping, living, and passing threw its doors, but just picture it in your head and think of the worst, and the multiply that by a hundred, and you can have a good idea of what took place. One example, our walnut hard floors from the period still have stains, marks, chips, breaks, etc from it being a Hospital, banisters and railings still have Soldiers names carved in them, walls three feet thick and loaded with hidden treasures that people put away so they wouldn't be taken or destroyed. And I could go on an on. My family has reunited many familys with documents of there Ancestors and items that have been found in our home. Most every item had a tag of some sort woth initials, name, address, etc on them to identify them to the owners. In our family records, and diarys, my Ancestors wife speaks of her hand aching from marking so many items, and her calves were burning from the non stop climbing up and down the stairs to relocate precious valuables that persons wanted to insure would be safe so they could be given to family members if they should pass. Its hard to imagine, but I could spend all night writing about his home...so, I will cut this short and do know you will recieve this info once you have won an item coming from our home. Do know, before any item could be placed in our display cabinets, they were all looked at by Licensed Historians as the family wanted only the best to display these items since the home was going to be toured a few times a year. With the home sitting atop a hill, you can see many documented signal post with only one being in the same county. The farthest being over 60 miles from our home and located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The home has slave quarters still present on the land, with many other buildings and barns, including a outside kitchen that was built with the home. In the basement of the home, it still has the original dirt floor with rock walls, and chains still attached that were used for prisoners or possibly slaves. The home is surrounded with many Large Oak Trees, and some of these have iron rings still located inside them. Walls in the home are over 3 feet thick and this was done in a way to hide persons/items when needed. Was a great way to escape the angry parent. J The home is finished with 4 separate attics and two of these are well known for being used as look out points as we found a great deal of relics in these locations, along with initials carved in the oak beams. Family diary’s speak of the men watching over the home from these areas and the great thing about our family is they were very smart to document everything they could. My Ancestor that was in the War kept a diary on him until he was mustered out in 1866. He received many awards and honors and we still have all his items used throughout the war and the Gar Encampments he attended. Inside the home my family had two complete walls made into display case’s to display Confederate relics and Union relics. Then throughout the home you will find many items of the period as the home has been kept this way since we’ve owned it. After growing up around such history, I have learned a great deal and also spent many hours in college courses. So, please understand, you will be buying from someone that isn’t a novice, but I don’t claim to be a Professional either. I give many speeches on my family’s History and still donate items from time to time. I started selling on Ebay as a well to help my family out since loosing a family member recently. During the family members fight, I lost my job, and have begun making Ebay and traveling to do shows my way of making a living for myself and my two little ones. I feel its time that we share these rare items with others that enjoy and share the same passion we do about History. We were very fortunate to have Ancestors save these rare items and we were very lucky that so many were left in almost perfect condition. Items left inside the home are well preserved and in his diary, it states that, " I'm in hopes that these items of such a terrible War will bring much light to others and may one day be used to explain our cause and the reasons we fought. I save these items for my family members to pass along and maybe one day they will be valuable and not such a terrible memory." I have spent countless nights reading his diary along with his wifes, and sitting in our familys home picturing what took place. Its amazing in one sense, but a horrible thing in another. But your item(s) will have wonderful history to be passed down to future family members and some items are certified and I will soon be giving certificates out myself to those who have purchased items from my familys home. I wish I could afford to have every item certified, but that would cost more then our home...lol...so, I will be making a certificate that you can keep with your item and also the letter you recieve so if you want to certify them, by a licensed Historian, you can. Also, this will help if you should ever resell the item or its passed on to others in your family. Its a real bonus to have and is another plus to purchasing from me. All items will be looked at by SEVERAL licensed Historians and Civil War Dealers, unless specified otherwise. Most of the dug relics will not have been looked at since if I dig them, then I don't question if they were there....and I'm sure many can understand this. Again, the buyer will recieve a letter with names, battles and history of my familys home and life, and you can also use the info, I have supplied here. I do apologize for such a long listing, but I want everyone to know what they are buying and to have a GREAT idea of where the item(s) comes from. Theres nothing better then having an item that you know the History of, and in my opinion, thats the best kind of relic to own. Don't forget the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War is approaching and items will sky rocket, so get them now while there still cheap and keep checking back as I list items often. Email me if you have any request as I'm sure to have it, and keep in mind, I always love to trade, so if your interested in this, email me at: estep1976@netscape.com and I will return your email as soon as I can. Many items will appear in many Price Guides and some of these will have documentation still with them. Many times I will list items and then learn more info out about them later, so if this happens, do know the winner will be sent and email with the extra info. Do know this doesn't mean a change in what the item is, but only information that may relate the item to a specific person, etc. The reason for this is I'm still going through the thousands of letters, documents, and several diarys that explain where most of my items come from and were found. So, it takes some time doing this by yourself as I'm a single operation, and matching exact items up with the documents is a hard thing to do unless it comes directly from our two display case's. I do thank you for looking at my site and helping me and my family make it in such hard times. Please read item conditions below and feel free to email me anytime. Keep in mind every Fixed Priced Item will have "make an offer", so feel free to do this as I'm always willing to work with anyone, long as its reasonable. Many people love the Civil War and can't afford some of these items, so this is why I encourage all to make offers, as I take these items as a blessing and this is why I try to help out anyone I can. I won't end an Auction early once a bid has taken place. I will always have someone available to answer emails and ship packages when I'm away, but I do take my Laptop on these trips, so please don't worry about not getting a response to a question or a package not being shipped. Please say a Prayer for all the Men, Women and their Family’s that have sacrificed for Freedom, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. God Bless you all and to all those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. You will never be forgotten!!! OOOORRAAAHHH!!! " IMPROVISE, ADAPT, AND OVERCOME!!!! " **IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FEEDBACK** Please make sure you leave a rating of "5" on all detailed sellers ratings (DSRs) when you are leaving feedback. Ebay recently made changes to their feedback system where sellers can suffer SEVERE penalties if anything besides a "5" is left and you may be hurting your favorite sellers without knowing it. What are these penalties? *Any rating below 4.9: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay *Any rating below 4.8: Seller pays an additional 10% in fees to sell on ebay, and seller's listings are demoted in ebay's search - making them harder to find *Any rating below 4.6: Seller pays an additional 5% in fees to sell on ebay and loses powerseller status. Listings are further demoted in ebay's search *Any rating below 4.3: Penalty -Seller's listings are moved the the last pages of search results *Any rating below 4.1: Penalty - Seller is no longer allowed to list on ebay eBay tells you a "4" rating means the item was accurately described, that you were satisfied with the seller's communication, the item was shipped quickly, and the shipping charges were reasonable - which a normal person would say is a good thing. However, ebay treats a "4" as a request to terminate the sellers's ebay account, charge the seller more, and make it difficult for bidders to find that seller's items. If you feel that the service you received does not warrant a "5" rating, PLEASE contact me so I can resolve any issues for you. Click Here. Double your traffic. Get Vendio Gallery - Now FREE!
