Ilya Shenker Russian born contemporary artist who immigrated to the United States in 1974 and began Jewish paintings after he settled here. This is a SIGNED limited edition piece by the Russian born contemporary Jewish artist ILYA SHENKER . He immigrated to the United States in 1974 and began Jewish painting after he settled here. You can find more information about his work by just doing a search on the internet with his name. One of the buyers of this item is an artist, and she said to me that this was on "rag" paper. Another buyer emailed me once and said it is an "offset lithograph". I cannot say for sure as I don't know, but I am only relaying this information to you. Overall, the piece measures 25 ¼” x 19”. There’s plenty of border, so the artwork itself along with the signature measures about 21 ½” x 16 1/4”. The piece is signed in the lower right corner. The signature is NOT imprinted, but authentic hand-signed ! In the lower right-hand corner is the hand-written edition number, which in this case is ???/190. The scene shows a Jewish woman participating in the Sabbath ritual of candle lighting . There are three children around the table, and on the table is a set of antique brass Shabbat candlesticks . There’s a yummy piece of challah bread underneath the napkin on top of that plate ! The piece will be sent to you fully insured and securely packaged in a hard round tube. NO RESERVE !!! I found a glossy brochure in my possession (not included with auction) which promotes this artist. Here is what it reads: “ILYA SHENKER … EXHIBITION …. MAY 10 THRU JUNE”.” On the inside is a bio of the artist and it reads as follows: “ILYA SHENKER … Ilya Shenker was born in Southern Russia in 1920. He traveled far and wide in the Soviet Union, drawing on the vast Russian panorama for inspiration, but always returning to the themes of Jewish life in his native Odessa and the Ukraine. In mournful, rich hues, he sought to capture the essence of that traditional Jewish life, now struggling for survival in the Soviet Union. His subject matter may be simple – a village wedding in Southern Russia, or an old man riding home on a horse-drawn cart – but one senses in these paintings the durability and determination of an entire people. Shenker’s non-Jewish works were widely exhibited in the Soviet Union and placed in the Pushkin Museums in Moscow and Leningrad and the Ukranian Art Museum in Kiev. But the Jewish tradition that was so important to him artistically was, of course, not approved by the authorities. Rebelling against pressure to work only on government-approved themese, Shenker finally decided to leave the country. Outside the Soviet Union, his work has been exhibited in France, Italy, Monaco, Hungary, and Egypt. Since emigrating to the United States in 1975, he has had several one-man shows in New York City and Washington, D.C.” On the back of the brochure it lists his EXHIBITIONS as follows (I’ll leave the dates out): Particippated in Odessa, Kiev Moscow Exhibitions:Group Exhibition in Vayna, Bulgavia.Group Exhibition in HungaryGroup Exhibition in Alexandria, EgyptOne Man Show Art Gallery “il sagittario” – Bologna, Italy”Ligoa Duncan Gallery, new York (Group Exhibition)Group Exhibition, The Rowe House Gallery, Washington, D.C.Group Exhibition in Main Library, Community RMOne Man Show, Manakh Gallery, New YorkOne Many Show, The Rowe House Gallery, Washington, D.C.Group Exchibition, Gallery Two, New YorkOne Man show, Art Gallery, New York UniversityOne Man Show, Nahamkin Gallery, New York45th Salon des Surindependants.
